Signs of Our Times
My new Atlantic column looks at the persistent appeal of neon signs. Despite civic campaigns against them--most recently in Madrid--neon signs remain beloved features of the urban landscape and increasingly valuable collector items. This old motel sign recently sold for $21,275 at auction. As neon signs have become less common on the roadside, they've become more and more treasured as artwork and memorabilia. The question now is whether, as LEDs replace neon in many commercial applications, there will be enough demand for glass bending craftsmanship to keep those skills alive.
